Exclusive Interview - Ava Smith

During the Spring/Summer 2013 season, I intercepted American beauty Ava Smith as she exited Milk Studios following the Peter Som presentation. Twenty-four year old Smith is considered a veteran by industry standards having initially entered modelling's fray at the sprightly age of 15. Early editorial bookings for British Vogue, Wonderland, American Marie Claire, and Russian Vogue, and a United Colours of Benetton campaign lensed by David Sims, pointed towards Smith quickly ascending modelling's ranks. As is often the case though in the fickle world of fashion, the industry buzz surrounding Smith dissipated with the promising newcomer relegated to less prestigious commercial modelling gigs. Fast-forward to the Spring/Summer 2012 season and Smith reappeared like a bolt out of the blue in a smattering of shows including for DKNY, Helmut Lang, Thierry Mugler, and Peter Pilotto. This time Smith kept the momentum going, nabbing 64 and 40 show bookings respectively during the Spring/Summer 2013 and Fall/Winter 2013 collections.

Smith's radiates a confidence and an aspirational type of beauty that is perceptible from the moment you meet her. Blessed with a diminutive yet powerful 176 cm frame, piercing cobalt blue eyes, and a striking jawline, there is no doubt that Smith has struck the genetic lottery. What sets Smith apart though from some of her runway contemporaries is her authentic nature, self-effacing humour, and a complete absence of ego that is often a glaring character trait amongst the bratty and the beautiful. Despite being caught up in the mad rush that is part and parcel of Fashion Week, Smith took the time to stop to pose for me outside Milk Studios and exuded a genuine warmth and interest in IMA. Smith's success is a testament to the power of perseverance,  impeccable timing, and the resolute support of her management team at Wilhelmina Models, and above all else her strength of character. IMA caught up exclusively with the engaging and charismatic Smith to discuss the virtues of age and experience, staying true to yourself, and the secret to longevity.

Inoubliable Model Army (IMA): Hi Ava, it's been almost a year since we met outside Milk Studios! Thank you for taking the time to chat with IMA and congrats on being the second top catwalker of the Spring/Summer 2013 season with 64 show bookings! You must have slept for a week when Fashion Week finally wrapped. Are you looking forward to the upcoming Spring/Summer 2014 shows and what do you hope to achieve this season?
AS: I usually take things as they come, I'm happy if I do one show or a hundred - I'd be lying if I said I look forward to fashion week though... it's exhausting!

IMA: Your backstory is quite fascinating given that you have been modelling since 2005. Can you fill us in on some of the gaps?
AS: I'm from the south side of Chicago, and I have been living/working in New York since I started at age 15. My mom is Lithuanian and my dad is French, English, German, Irish, and Native American. I was scouted during a summer job on a beach near Chicago and signed with Factor Models (at the time it was still Elite) that Fall. That was 9 years ago... going on 10 because I'll be 25 this Fall!

IMA: Fashion is an incredibly fickle industry. You initially burst onto the modelling scene in 2006 appearing in editorials for British Vogue shot by Paolo Roversi, Wonderland and Russian Vogue shot by Lee Bromfield, and in a Benetton campaign lensed by David Sims, before the interest gradually dissipated. Then bang, you remerge a few years later at the Spring/Summer 2012 collections with a renewed vigour. What do you feel have been the major contributing factors to the shift in your modelling trajectory?
AS: I don't think there is an obvious answer for that. A lot of factors have to come together for your career to make a leap onto another level. I'm sure timing plays a big role, and a good, smart management team who believes in you.

IMA: Given your early start in modelling, do you feel better equipped to deal now with the pressures of modelling and your current success, and what are your personal views on the CFDA's ban on the use of models under the age of 16 on fashion's runways?
AS: It's hard to say if I feel better equipped now because I am actually older or it's just that I'm more experienced. I think it's probably both. I'm more appreciative of the opportunities presented to me and able to recognise the amount of work it takes from multiple persons in order to maintain the high calibre of work we do. As a teenager who does relatively well right away, you don't know what it's like to be at the bottom and it's easy to develop an ego. You have a very limited perspective. I think I was mature enough to handle it then, but much more so now that I'm older. I agree with the CFDA's ban on underage girls because ultimately every girl is different and without some restrictions we could be putting our young girls in compromising positions they are not yet able to cope with.

IMA: Modelling is an industry where so many factors which affect your career are beyond your control and every season brings on a new set of challenges. How do you steel yourself against constant physical scrutiny and the possible rejection that comes with the territory?
AS: It's the same as in normal life, not everyone is going to love you - or even like you, so rejection is just a part you have to accept. The sooner you realise it the easier it will be for you. I keep an open mind and try to do the things that I know I will respect and be proud of. The moment you compromise what you believe is right whether it's your actions or your words, you lose your self-respect and that's when it becomes hard. As long as You like yourself, it doesn't matter what everyone else thinks. As for the physical part, I keep myself in excellent shape so I'd challenge anyone to try and test that.

IMA: American girls appear to be making a major comeback in modelling, with yourself, Madison Headrick, Juliana Schurig, Mackenzie Drazan, Athena Wilson, Ondria Hardin, and Louise Parker helping to redefine concepts of American beauty. How does it feel to be part of this motley crew of amazing beauties and what is your personal definition of modern day American beauty?
AS: It's great, I'm flattered to be included in such a lovely bunch of girls. We're all different in looks, personality, age, goals, and achievements but none of that matters... that's an American beauty to me. Natural, confident, and genuine, from the inside out.

IMA: The casting process can be incredibly daunting with so many incredible girls striving to make their mark each season. What is your secret to making a favourable and lasting impression on casting directors and designers during the casting process?
AS: Be yourself. It's so cliché but true. When you try to present something that isn't you it comes off as fake, which is never a favourable quality. And be professional, that presents you in a way where people want to work with you over and over again.

IMA: On the runway, you exude a womanly confidence that is completely natural, unforced, and believable. Models including yourself, Drake Burnette, Julia Frauche, Saskia de Brauw, and Aymeline Valade are spearheading a trend amongst models hitting their stride professionally well into their 20s. What factors do you feel are contributing to this shift in the modelling paradigm?
AS: I think you've just described it. A natural, unforced, believable confidence that only comes with getting a little older. I think people want that attitude associated with their clothing. Women want to look like that woman and be that woman. The modern woman has become such a force to be reckoned with in the world today. Now more than ever, we're holding positions in the family and workplace that once were designated only for men. Women are earning more money, attaining higher positions in major companies, and have a growing presence in our governing bodies. How could they relate to teenagers dressed up in expensive clothes?

IMA: One of the most enjoyable aspects of show season is the backstage camaraderie between models. Who are your closest model buddies and did you take any newcomers under your wing this past season?
AS: I like everyone, but I've also been around for quite some time so most of my "model" friends have moved onto other things. With such a short shelf life, it's hard to have lasting relationships within the modelling community because we all have different careers and bounce around a lot. I'm more than happy to offer the youngsters advice but as far as taking to one particular newcomer, I haven't.

IMA: You've recently appeared in a smattering of editorials for Russh, CR Fashion Book, Dazed & Confused, Ponystep, French Numéro, and the Spanish, Japanese and Italian editions of Vogue. What do you most enjoy about the editorial component of modelling and are there any photographers whose aesthetic and way of interaction with his/her subjects you particularly admire?
AS: I enjoy the freedom that the editorial aspect of modelling allows. There are still lines you have to stay within, especially in this day and age when there is so much advertising and branding going on, but you can still bring a diverse group of ideas together and compose a totally unique image. As a model there is more opportunity to bring something to the photo and collaborate with the team. I admire the photographers who still have their passion. It's so easy to become jaded and ambivalent towards your work because in a way you end up being subservient to a client, to magazine or an agency, and you lose most of the control of the image. I'm sure it can be very stifling. If they care too much they'll go crazy; but if they can find the happy balance between too much and too little, it makes for a wonderful environment for everyone involved.

IMA: What do you love most about modelling and if there was one aspect of the industry you could change, what would that be?
AS: I love that it is indefinable. Fashion and modelling are forever tied to the fact they are the product of people changing over time. Fashion is the change. The models and trends that were popular 20 years ago aren't as what is popular now. To me it's how the business has prevailed throughout depressions and recessions and economic booms and falls.

IMA: What makes you "Inoubliable" (Unforgettable)?
AS: That, in my opinion, is in the eye of the beholder. People choose for themselves why a person is memorable for them. True longevity to me can't be forced.

American Vogue is in fine form for its July 2013 issue with an editorial lensed by Craig McDean showcasing a stunning array of modelling talent. Industry veterans Stella Tenant, Carolyn Murphy, Liya Kebede, and Karen Elson are joined by modelling's current faces "du jour" Joan Smalls, Karlie Kloss, Fei Fei Sun, and comeback kid Catherine McNeil. Making their American Vogue debuts are Hungarian newcomer Vanessa Axente and the beguiling Amanda Murphy. I have always been partial to American Vogue's multi-girl editorials and this cast proves to be exceptional, delivering on all fronts with diversity reflected in the age range and ethnicity of the models selected. Each model delivers something unique and special; from Tenant's aristocratic air, to Kloss' gamine beauty, Kebede's sublime elegance, Fei Fei's delicate composure, and Axente's infectious youthful enthusiasm. With the editorials tagline "Identity Politics" begging the question, "Who do you think you are?", the answer seems patently clear - "All of the above!"

Heart of Glass

Glass Magazine ups the stakes with a breathtakingly beautiful editorial featuring some of modelling's most compelling new faces. Former model turned photographer Bojana Tatarksa trains her lens on newcomers Carla Ciffoni, Asia Piwka, Elisabeth Erm, Pauline Hoarau, and IMA favourite Athena Wilson, for the series of stark black and white portraits. Hailing from Bulgaria, Tatarska began her modelling career at age 18 in Paris while pursuing studies in Art and Communication at the Universtié Paris-Sorbonne. Tatarska's experience in front of the lens served as an education for the self-taught photographer, who in 2006 traded modelling for a career as a professional freelance photographer. Tatarska trains her lens on Ciffoni, Wilson, Hoarau et al., with a clear focus on imbuing the images with the individual spirit of each subject. Tatarksa takes matters to heart, capturing the cool boyish androgyny of Wilson, the compelling ambivalence of Ciffoni, the simmering sensuality of Hoarau, the bohemian spirit of Erm, and the pristine in your face beauty of Piwka.

Body of Proof - Miranda Kerr

One model whose looks have grown on me gradually over the years is that of Australian beauty Miranda Kerr. Discovered in 1997 via the Dolly Magazine Model Search, Kerr conquered the local modelling scene via gigs for Australian department chain David Jones, and Aussie publications Cleo, Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, before relocating to New York to further her international modelling ambitions. Initially pitched as a commercial model, Kerr launched into the public's consciousness via contracts with cosmetics giant Maybelline and lingerie company Victoria's Secret. A switch of management in 2009 to modelling powerhouse IMG saw a definitive change in Kerr's modelling trajectory courtesy of an exclusive Spring/Summer 2010 appearance at Balenciaga. Kerr monopolised on the wave of interest generated by that singular runway turn with a deluge of blue chip bookings; walking for Prada at the Fall/Winter 2010 collections followed by campaigns for Prada and Jil Sander, and the clincher - a Vogue Italia September 2010 cover lensed by the Godfather of modelling Steven Meisel.

Kerr has since traversed the worlds of commercial and high fashion modelling seamlessly, alternating between air kiss blowing antics at the Victoria's Secret Runway show and more subdued appearances at Miu Miu, Chanel, Stella McCartney, Lanvin, Christian Dior, and Viktor & Rolf. What I admire though most about Kerr is that she has parlayed IMG's high fashion initiative into solid editorial bookings for the likes of Love, V, Harper's Bazaar, Purple, French Numéro, and virtually every international edition of Vogue. Displaying stunning versatility, smart business acumen, and a work ethic that would put most of us to shame, Kerr has earned her place amongst fashion's elite. In the words of IMG Model Management's CEO and super agent Ivan Bart, "Until Miranda Kerr, I had never seen it the other way: where somebody was a star in a mass-market brand and as a result was embraced by fashion. But again, that's not without work, strategy and planning."

Defining Lines - Ji Hye Park

Korean newcomer Ji Hye Park appears in the July 2013 issue of Russian Vogue captured by photographer Emma Tempest. Park's pristine angular features serve as the focal point for the series of studio and beachside location images. Decked out in black and white ensembles from the Fall/Winter 2013 collections of Marni, Antonio Berardi, Costume National, Givenchy, Gucci, and Valentino, Park cuts a fine figure as she braves the elements of the wind, sun, and sand. During the Fall/Winter 2013 collections, Park emerged as a front runner amongst the current generation of emerging Asian models with 31 blue chip show appearances. Park's stunning versatility was evident as she embodied the aesthetic for a diverse range of shows including Alexander Wang, Prabal Gurung, Oscar de la Renta, Stella McCartney, Miu Miu, Lanvin, and Donna Karan. IMA adores Park's razor sharp cheekbones, delicate almond shaped eyes, and the sleek lines of her imposing 179 cm runway silhouette which has designers and casting directors enamoured.

Prada's Red Alert

The Spring/Summer 2014 Prada Menswear show offers a small glimpse of what may be in store casting-wise for the Spring/Summer 2014 Women's RTW collections. Casting director Ashley Brokaw corralled a selection of female models to partake in the Prada Menswear presentation consisting of a smattering of new faces and current Prada it girls. Industry veteran Cameron Rusell and Prada campaign girls Vanessa Axente and Amanda Murphy were the only familiar faces in the 12 strong line-up. Amongst the nine newcomers making their Prada runway debuts were Kenyan native Malaika Firth, Brazilian Marina Nery, the adorable Nashville cutie Leona Binx Walton, and Tamila Naser from the Dominican Republic. Rounding out the cast were New Zealander Holly Rose, another Jablonski by the name of Maggie, Germany's Anna Ewers, Dutchie Julia Bergshoeff, and pint-sized Norwegian/American Kristine Frøset. Ashley Brokaw brings an element of surprise to Prada's runway with her eclectic and racially diverse selection of models. With debate swirling around the ongoing lack of diversity on fashion's runways, IMA hopes that this inclusive line-up of Prada beauties will have a flow on effect throughout the Spring/Summer 2014 collections.

Paris Vogue takes a walk on the wild side with supermodel Anja Rubik for an editorial shot on location in St Barths with photographer Mario Sorrenti. The Polish beauty strips down to the bare essentials - swimwear from the Fall/Winter 2013 collections and tribal inspired accessories styled by Editor-in-chief Emmanuelle Alt. The multi-faceted Rubik continues to seduce the fashion world with her dynamic personality, intelligence, and versatile beauty following almost a decade in the modelling spotlight. Rubik and Sorrenti are certainly no strangers, having collaborated previously on shoots for W Magazine, the New York Times T Magazine style supplement, and on multiple Paris Vogue editorials. Sorrenti captures Rubik's refined sensuality as she poses languidly poolside, on the beach foreshore, and against the stunning backdrop of the Caribbean Sea. Rubik is one of a handful of the current generation of models who has truly earned her supermodel stripes with her chameleon-like modelling ability and through her contributions to the industry as Editor-in-chief of 25 Magazine.

Cavalli's Angels

Roberto Cavalli enlists three of the modelling's big guns for its Fall/Winter 2013 campaign lensed by photographer Mario Testino. Supermodels Liya Kebede, Liu Wen, and Iselin Steiro pose for Testino with car headlights shining brightly on them through a misty haze. The stunning trio are styled by Marie Chaix in elaborate black and white ensembles with a dash of red from the Italian label's Fall/Winter 2013 collection. The charismatic beauties make for an inspired piece of casting with Norwegian Iselin Steiro's blonde icy looks complimenting the glowing rich caramel skin tones and exuberance of Ethiopian stunner Liya Kebede, and the exotic modern day beauty of Chinese top model Liu Wen. Both Steiro and Kebede have been modelling stalwarts for over a decade while twenty-five year old Wen has achieved many firsts in her comparatively short modelling career as a face and spokesperson for Estée Lauder cosmetics and as the first model of Asian descent to walk in the Victoria's Secret Runway Show. Roberto Cavalli clearly has his eye on the prize with a Fall/Winter 2013 campaign and cast that is relatable to a large segment of the global market thanks to its inclusive beauty ideal.

Flowers in the Attic

French beauties Marine Deleeuw and Josephine Le Tutour star in an eerily beautiful editorial for Exit Magazine's Spring/Summer 2013 issue. Set in a stairwell leading up to what appears to be an attic, newcomers Deleeuw and Le Tutour pose for photographer Rafael Stahelin in a sparsely furnished room strewn with flowers. Deleeuw's brooding Gallic features and Le Tutour's haunting gaze set the mood for this reflective editorial. Represented by Elite Model Management in Paris and the Society in New York, both Deleeuw and Le Tutour were two of the most hotly contested newcomers of the Fall/Winter 2013 season, appearing in 63 and 52 shows apiece. The runaway successes of Le Tutour and Deleeuw is a testament to the scouting powers of the Elite Model Look competition of which both models are former alumni. Le Tutour took out the title of the French division of the Elite Model Look contest in 2011 and Deleeuw competed in 2012 before taking the modelling world by storm during the Fall/Winter 2012 collections.

Back to the Future - Malaika Firth

Prada unveils its Fall/Winter 2013 campaign today featuring a magnificent cast of promising newcomers, established faces, and iconic supers. Photographer Steven Meisel captures the essence of Prada with a simple paired back grey background, wooden floors, and steel legged chairs contrasting with the rich opulence of the Italian label's Fall/Winter 2013 collection. Casting director Ashley Brokaw takes a leap of faith with red hot newcomers Malaika Firth, Kristine Frøset, Amanda Murphy, and Sophia Ahrens who are joined by comeback kid Catherine McNeil, Meisel favourite Fei Fei Sun, and the elusive Freja Beha Erichsen. Rounding out the cast are industry veterans Christy Turlington, Rachel Williams, Cameron Russell, and the enigmatic French model-turned-music producer Caroline de Maigret.

Inoubliable Model Army is particularly excited about the debut appearance of Kenyan British newcomer Malaika Firth, who first popped up on IMA's radar over a year ago. Firth owes her exotic hard to place looks to a unique blend of Kenyan, Ugandan, Seychellois, Swiss and British heritage, and was brought to Premier Model Management's attention thanks to Firth's mother who called the agency after having viewed the agency's "The Model Agency" television series. Firth's appearance in Prada's Fall/Winter 2013 campaign marks the first time a black model has been featured in a Prada campaign line-up since Naomi Campbell's Fall/Winter 1994 appearance.

British top model Jourdan Dunn hits the ground running on the promenades of Miami's South Beach with a stunning editorial for Allure's July 2013 issue. Dunn is captured by photographer Alexi Lubomirski for the editorial entitled "The Happiness Jean." Dunn, who recently relocated to New York to further her modelling career, looks positively radiant in form-fitting denim ensembles which showcase her magnificent physique. Since being discovered in 2006 by a Storm model agent while shopping with a friend in Primark, Dunn has carved out a reputation as one of the industry's most dynamic and versatile models. Dunn's career highlights include; walking in the Prada Fall/Winter 2008 show, making her the first black model to do so since Naomi Campbell's appearance in 1997, being named Model of the Year in 2008 by the British Fashion Council, posing for Steven Meisel for the covers of Vogue Italia and American Vogue, and strutting her stuff for Victoria's Secret's 2012 runway show. Speaking with the Guardian in 2008, Sarah Doukas founder of Storm Models makes the astute observation, "Not many British girls make a mark on the fashion world. When she went to Paris Fashion Week after the Prada show she got standing ovations from the big fashion houses. Jourdan's also rather wonderful - she's strong-minded and funny. She has us in stitches."

Exclusive Interview - Anna Martynova

Nineteen year old Russian newcomer Anna Martynova had model pundits hedging their bets on the mysterious blonde beauty who enthralled all during her appearances for Jil Sander and Miu Miu at the Fall/Winter 2012 collections. Martynova's distinctive crescent shaped eyes and pronounced down-turned mouth stood out amongst a sea of homogenous faces. Martynova possesses an enigmatic quality which has casting directors and designers alike cast under her beguiling spell. Casting director Daniel Peddle is a fan having recently profiled Martynova as one of his standout newcomers for Last Magazine, in addition to featuring her in the line-ups for 3.1 Phillip Lim and Suno during the Fall/Winter 2013 season. With her lithe 180 cm couture ready frame and golden flaxen hair, Martynova has wasted little time in scoring plum campaign spots for Christian Dior and Herve L. Leroux. While editorial appearances for Russh magazine, Crash, and Yo Donna Spain hint at the promising career ahead for this potential model as muse. In between castings for the Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2013 collections, Martynova took a breather to chat exclusively with IMA about her inspirations in fashion and life, and the importance of living in the present.

Inoubliable Model Army (IMA): Hi Anna, thank you for chatting with IMA. You're a relative newcomer to modelling having debuted at the Fall/Winter 2012 shows as an exclusive for Jil Sander in Milan before moving on to walk for Miu Miu, Andrew Gn, Leonard and Carven in Paris. Were you surprised by the industry's positive response and are you looking forward to the Spring/Summer 2014 season in September?
AM: When I first started modelling, I didn't know anything about the fashion industry up until the moment I did the Jil Sander exclusive. At the time I was simply glad that it happened to me but then I began to have a few questions about which shows I would like to be doing. I realised though that it was also important for me to stay calm and to enjoy the present.

IMA: Would you mind sharing a bit of your backstory?
AM: I am from Togliatty, Russia. I'm 19 years old and am constantly travelling at the moment so do not really have a home base. When I was 16, I decided to give modelling a try so I searched the internet for agencies and was eventually signed by my mother agency Grace Models!

IMA: Has it been difficult adjusting from life away from home, and what do your family and friends think of your career as a globe-trotting model?
AM: It's not so difficult, I think it all depends on how you perceive it.

IMA: You’re part of a new group of promising models to emerge from Russia including Sasha Luss, Nastya Kusakina, and Katya Riabinkina. Is modeling something that you had always aspired to and what advice would you offer to other young girls in Russia who are considering a career in modelling?
AM: My advice would be to just try it (modelling). If it doesn't work out, don't waste your time or else push yourself to go further!"

IMA: What are your hopes and dreams for the future and do you have a Plan B to fall back on in case modeling falls through?
AM: I have Plans B, C, D, E... and more, but that's a secret!

IMA: Casting director Daniel Peddle highlighted you as a face to watch in the Fall/Winter 2012 issue of Last Magazine, and cast you in the 3.1 Phillip Lim F/W 2013 show. Do you find the casting process during Fashion Week daunting, and what do you feel is most important when it comes to impressing casting directors and designers?
AM: I appreciate Daniel Peddle's taste in faces and also in art. I follow him on Instagram! So it's always a pleasure to be cast by him.

IMA: Models are more and more becoming arbiters of style. Has your fashion sense changed much as a result of your exposure to the industry and how would you describe your individual style?
AM: I like to mix different things from my wardrobe, it all depends on my feelings and mood. I'm inspired by the forms of minimalism and modern design, but ideas for colours generally come from galleries and exhibitions.

IMA: During the recent Fall/Winter 2013 shows you appeared in 29 shows including Oscar de la Renta, Helmut Lang, Preen, and Antonio Marras. Do you enjoy runway modeling and what thoughts go through your head as you are walking down the runway with all eyes on you?
AM: On the runway my emotions depend on the how I feel wearing the clothes and of course, the shoes!

IMA: Congratulations on landing the Christian Dior Spring/Summer 2013 campaign lensed by Willy Vanderperre! How would you describe the experience of shooting with Willy and fellow models Nicole Pollard, Daria Strokus, and Marie Piovesan on such a prestigious campaign?
AM: I've worked with Willy Vanderperre on two occasions. The most memorable thing that I've noticed is Willy's hands on approach to taking pictures. He works hard on posture and the movement of the models, that's why his pictures have a sensual almost touchable quality. Also he is a really nice guy, just like his entire Belgium dream team!

IMA: The life of a models involves a lot of travelling, time spent alone in hotels away from home. Do you have a close support network of friends in the industry and who are you closest model buddies?
AM: The people I mostly hangout with tend to be stylists and photographers. Model talk is not really something that is attractive to me. But having said that, I do have a few really good model friends.

IMA: You recently appeared in a gorgeous editorial for Russh magazine photographed by Elina Kechicheva. Do you enjoy the process of collaboration on editorial shoots?
AM: I enjoy doing both shows and editorials. I love my job at the moment!

IMA: Imagine you have an entire day free to do whatever you please. What would a perfect day in the life of Anna Martynova entail?
AM: I would like to have my own personal helicopter which would whisk me away to all of the best places in India. I enjoy exploring new cultures, nature, and the mentality of people. That makes me happy, also spicy food and taking polaroids ;-).

IMA: What makes you “Inoubliable” (Unforgettable)?
AM: I just try to be myself!

Six is Enough?

Vogue Italia celebrates 25 years with Editor-in-chief Franca Sozzani and resident photographer Steven Meisel leading proceedings, with a visual smorgasbord of modelling talent spread over six alternating covers. Modelling legend Linda Evangelista leads the charge with supermodels Gisele Bundchen, Natalia Vodianova, Stella Tenant, Raquel Zimmerman, and Tony Ward in tow. Comeback kid Cameron Russell, Meghan Collison, and breakthrough star Amanda Murphy round out the cast. Meisel references Richard Avedon's iconic Revlon Unforgettable campaign and the high energy imagery of the late great Bill King for the fashion bible's "Revolution" inspired issue. The Fall/Winter 2013 collections of Versace, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Giorgio Armani, and Valentino provide further inspiration for the eclectic mish-mash of covers. The only let down as far as IMA is concerned is the alarming absence of any models of colour amongst the extensive cast. Perhaps a 7th cover featuring modelling legends Iman Abdulmajid, Liya Kebede, and Naomi Campbell, alongside current top models Jourdan Dunn, Joan Smalls, Grace Mahary, Senait Gidey and Malaika Firth would have been more in keeping with the issue's revolutionary spirit.

Pure Synergy

Swiss photographer Hans Feurer and a cast of models create pure synergy for a mammoth editorial featured in Antidote Magazine's Spring/Summer 2013 Street Issue. The editorial comprising of 146 images showcases an incredible cast of modelling talent including Jourdan Dunn, Frida Gustavsson, Catherine McNeil, Jac Jagaciak, Barbara Palvin, Aline Weber, Anna Selezneva, Daphne Groeneveld, Sung Hee Kim, Hanna Ben Abdesslem, Jacquelyn Jablonski, Tian Yi, Hana Jirikova, Zuzanna Bijoch, Marique Schimmel, and Valerija Kelava. Feurer's preference for on-location shoots and his trademark use of light to imbue his images with texture and mood is no doubt inspired by the photographer's travels in 1966 via Land Rover from Southampton to South Africa during which he decided to devote his energies to a career in fashion photography. Feurer's unique imagery conveys a vibrant energy and strength that has been a common thread in his contributions to publications including i-D, French Numéro, Muse, Teen Vogue, and Paris Vogue. When quizzed about the secret to remaining relevant following over 40 years in the industry Feurer states matter of factly, "I approach each shoot with the same excitement and enthusiasm I felt when I was a child building a tree house."

The New Recruits

As the Fall/Winter 2013 campaigns begin to trickle through, IMA will be keeping close tabs on the newcomers who have managed to successfully convert their runway cache into lucrative blue chip campaign bookings. Three of IMA's Top 10 Newcomer alumnae Marine Deleeuw, Mijo Mihaljcic, and Joséphine Le Tutour kick off proceedings for Iceberg's Fall/Winter 2013 campaign offering. Lensed by new boy wonder Sharif Hamza, the trio of raven-haired beauties pose alongside male models Ian Sharp, Alexander Ferrario, and Matthew Bell. Mihaljcic, Le Tutour and Deleeuw are styled with barely there make-up looks and sleekly side-parted hair which compliment the Italian label's bold colour blocked sweater dresses and cardigan jackets embellished with graphic criss-cross stripes. French ingenues Deleeuw and Le Tutour, and Begrade native Mihaljcic, represent the new band of beauties whose restrained beauty, compelling androgyny, and impeccable sense of style is the very embodiment of the very aesthetic that has casting directors and designers in a frenzy. With representation by Elite Model Management Paris, The Society Management NYC, and IMG Worldwide, Deleeuw, Le Tutour and Mihlajcic are primed to continue their dominance at the impending Spring/Summer 2014 collections.

Mind Over Matter - Erin Wasson

When Texan supermodel Erin Wasson first emerged on the modelling scene in the late 90s, little did the then 15 year old realise that over a decade later she would still be treading the runway, closing no less than for Chanel at the Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2013 shows. At age 31, Wasson is the rarest breed of model whose stunning beauty has almost played second fiddle to her dynamism, authenticity, and her talents as a designer, style icon, and entrepreneur. Throughout her modelling career, Wasson has played muse to designers Karl Lagerfeld and Alexander Wang, and to photographers Mario Testino, Patrick Demarchelier, Peter Lindbergh, and Inez Van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin. Wasson's stunning versatility is evident in her extensive body of work for publications including i-D, Interview, Harper's Bazaar, V, and virtually every international edition of Vogue. Not one to be pigeonholed, Wasson  single-handedly made tattoos every model's coolest accessory while exploring her creative talents; styling designer and friend Alexander Wang's runway shows, creating her own jewellery line called Low Luv, and designing capsule collections for RCVA and Zadig & Voltaire.

What IMA finds most impressive about Wasson is her ability to embody the aesthetic of any brand whether it be the Gap, H&M, Esprit, Roberto Cavalli, Balenciaga, Gucci, or Maybelline, without ever losing sight of her own identity. Speaking with American Elle in 2008, Wasson explains "I have too much going on in my brain to just be a face, an image, without a voice behind it." One always gets the sense that Wasson is always present in a metaphysical sense in her print or campaign images, and that is why designers, photographers, and casting directors continue to be enamoured by her. Wasson's unique sensibility on-and-off the runway has earned her a reputation as an arbiter of style amongst designers, stylists, and bloggers. Speaking with Pret-a-Porter, Wasson gives her take on the coolness factor, "My definition of cool is being so diehard true to who you are. People are cool when they have opinions and when they have something to say, and when they're not afraid to go against the grain. That's what's cool."

Having modelled since her mid-teens, Wasson has managed to successfully navigate modelling's minefield by remaining true to herself and by choosing to nurture her mind, body, and spirit. Speaking candidly with Vogue Italia, Wasson offers the following advice to young models, "Find out what you really love and don't stop doing it. You know, I think it's really easy to get swept up into the fashion industry and forget that girl that you were beforehand. You forget all of those things that really made you happy and things that really you were passionate about. You know, I mean I know a lot of girls that maybe were studying in school and their studies got put on the back-burner to be able to pursue a career in fashion. And I think that it's really important to know that it's a job and when you go home, you need to be doing something that fulfils your soul." In an industry where beauty is a disposable commodity, factors such as personality, life experience, and a strong sense of self are determining which models remain in the modelling spotlight beyond more than a few consecutive seasons.

Inoubliable Model Army favourite Mijo Mihaljcic continues her editorial dominance with a starring turn for this month's British Harper's Bazaar. The Serbian brunette beauty stops traffic as she takes to the streets for photographer Tom Allen decked out in looks from the Fall/Winter 2013 collections of Givenchy, Bottega Veneta, Prada, Michael Kors, Miu Miu, and Chanel. Twenty year old Mihaljcic appeared out of nowhere during the Fall/Winter 2013 season gracing the runways of 47 shows, and has since racked up editorial bookings en masse for Dazed & Confused, Vogue Netherlands, Twin Magazine, Dahse, and Vision China. Mihaljcic's Fall/Winter 2013 campaign slot for Iceberg confirms her status as one of the key newcomers to convert her runway traction into lucrative editorial and campaign bookings. Mihaljcic's sultry androgynous looks and compelling runway presence was evident throughout the entire Fall/Winter 2013 season from her first appearance closing for BCBG Max Azria in New York to her final turn on the runway at Chanel. With a name that is not only memorable but impossibly adorable, you can be certain to be hearing and seeing a lot more about Mijo in the months ahead.

Romance is in the air as British Vogue pairs the gorgeously doe-eyed Brit modelling sensation Sam Rollinson and actor Max Minghella as star-crossed lovers. The Doncaster native is lensed by photographer Alasdair McLellan in the Yorkshire countryside with heart throb Minghella as her suitor. Stylist Francesca Burns showcases voluminous coats and knitwear from the Fall/Winter 2013 collections of Louis Vuitton, Prada, Gucci, Céline, and Chanel. The chemistry between Rollinson and Minghella strikes all the right chords with McLellan capturing every nuance with his astute lens. Eighteen year old Rollinson who is a dead ringer for former top model Tasha Tilberg only with a more imposing physique, was one of the standout faces during the Fall/Winter 2013 season logging a staggering 62 show bookings. Rollinson's high sculpted cheekbones, masculine jawline, and nape grazing bob have been attracting a even more admirers in editorials for W, CR Fashion Book, US Harper's Bazaar, V, the French, Spanish, Italian, and Chinese editions of Vogue, and on the cover of i-D. Rollinson's strong editorial presence will no doubt keep her omnipresent in the minds of casting directors and designers alike, and bodes well for the impending Spring/Summer 2014 collections.

Exclusive Interview - Andreea Diaconu

Romanian model Andreea Diaconu is riding on the crest of a wave that has been steadily building momentum since she first started modelling at age 13. Now at the ripe old age of 22, Diaconu is hitting her stride professionally, bringing to the fore a wealth of experience, modelling know-how, and a full appreciation of what it takes to succeed at the elite level. Diaconu has one of those faces that is quite simply beautiful. There are no tricks or gimmicks to Diaconu's appeal - that is aside from her exquisite heart-shaped face, her hypnotic blue/green eyes, and the most stunning athletic physique to hit the runway since Gisele Bundchen. Adding to her allure is Diaconu's disarming goofball sense of humour and a tomboyish quality which counter-balances her extreme prettiness.

Inoubliable Model Army met and photographed Diaconu on two separate occasions during the Spring/Summer 2013 collections. During those encounters IMA forecast that Diaconu's modelling trajectory was about to skyrocket into previously unchartered territory. Fast-forward 10 months on and Diaconu is experiencing what can only be described as the zenith of her modelling career as one of Paris Vogue's current editorial faves, a stunning Paris Vogue cover lensed by Mario Sorrenti which had even the most jaded of model pundits gob-smacked, and unprecedented campaign and editorial interest from clients including Dolce & Gabbana, Juicy Couture, Isabel Marant, Ralph Lauren, MaxMara, W, Vogue Japan, and Vogue Italia. Diaconu came full circle recently, chatting exclusively to IMA about her whirlwind year, her joy at finally walking for Prada, and the Paris Vogue cover that has everyone including her own family talking!

Inoubliable Model Army (IMA): Hi Andreea, thank you for taking a moment to chat with IMA. We met during the Spring/Summer 2013 season at the castings and fittings for Altuzarra and Oscar de la Renta, when I hinted that things were going to shift for you on the modelling front in a major way. Do you feel that things have changed for you modelling-wise over the past 9 months?
AD: Things are constantly changing and that's motivating as well as stimulating. I agree that my career has taken a different direction lately thanks to David Sims, Emmanuelle Alt, Mario Sorrenti and constant supporters like James Scully, Russell Marsh, Ashley Brokaw and John Pfeiffer, my great agents and many many others who've helped me in different stages, which of course makes me incredibly happy and grateful!

IMA: Would you mind sharing a bit of your backstory with IMA?
AD: I grew up in Bucharest and spent my Summers in Transylvania. I started (modelling) at 13 to make some money, but wanted to quit soon after as it was interfering with my school and other activities I was interested in at the time. I appreciate it to the fullest now and consider myself lucky to have the opportunity to work with such talented people.

IMA: Congratulations on scoring your first Paris Vogue cover for June 2013 lensed by Mario Sorrenti! How does it feel to be a Paris Vogue cover girl and what was it like collaborating with Mario for this shoot. Did you realise at the time that this shoot would encompass a possible cover try?
AD: I did not expect to be on the cover at all to be honest and I didn't believe it until I saw the magazine! The location was splendid, we had loads of fun and Mario, Emmanuelle, Anja, James and Aaron made me feel very comfortable... I didn't realise how naked I was until I saw the pictures and had a bit of a freak out moment caused by my family after seeing them haha. The fact that I'm on the cover still hasn't sunken in. I'm thankful and proud of course!

IMA: Your graduation to modelling's major league has been a long time coming with close to 7 years of development, learning your craft, and persistence. What key factors do you feel have led you to this pivotal moment in your career trajectory?
AD: I definitely think 14 year old models should not exist. I was working with people twice my age and I timidly looked up to them as teachers rather than "colleagues". Traits such as patience and good balance on high heels definitely come in handy haha! You need to love what you're doing, and to know and feel comfortable with yourself.

IMA: Having started modelling at such a young age, what advice would you offer to young girls considering a career in modelling?
AD: To wait until they're 16 or even older and to do their research on agencies.

IMA: You possess one of the most classically beautiful faces in modelling at the moment. Were you aware of the power of your beauty growing up, and are there any other models whose success or longevity in the industry you particularly admire or seek to emulate?
AD: I definitely wasn't aware of it. I'm still not, so thank you for the compliment. I was of course bullied for being tall and skeletal-looking but it didn't affect me much, at least I don't remember it now. I think Lauren Hutton, Malgosia Bela, Carolyn Murphy, and Daria Werbowry are stunning.

IMA: The past Fall/Winter 2013 show season was your most successful to date with a 38 show tally including appearances at Jason Wu, Prabal Gurung, Tom Ford, Prada, Versace, Gucci, Balmain, and Stella McCartney. What are your fondest recollections from the overall season?
AD: It was very relaxed and just spending time with the girls, seeing the masters at work and a good book made it all pass very smoothly. I was very excited for Prada since I've been on option for the show for the last 8 years and it finally happened! I also loved everyone at Céline, Stella McCartney, Gucci, and Versace!

IMA: This year alone you've collaborated with Sølve Sundsbø, David Sims, Cass Bird, and Mario Sorrenti for Vogue Italia, Paris Vogue, Vogue Japan, and J. Crew. What career goals have you set for the remainder of 2013 and are there any key photographers that you would love to work with and why?
AD: I've always wanted to work with David (so thank God that happened haha). I'd love to work with Steven Meisel who apparently booked me for the Dolce & Gabbana campaign when I was 14, but I couldn't get out of the country. I don't know if this is true or if it was just an invention by my agency - but I do remember being stuck at the airport and then not travelling for six months as the laws regarding travelling minors had just changed.

IMA: One of the highlights of Fashion Week is that it affords the opportunity to catch up with friends backstage. Who are your closest pals in the industry and do you get to hang out much in between modelling assignments?
AD: Diana Moldovan, Toni Garrn, Kendra Spears, Jac, Julia Nobis, Katlin Aas... we all hang out, we're all in the same cities for a month! I just started going to a model-filled gym and that's the only time I spend with other model friends.

IMA: You opened a restaurant back home in Bucharest with fellow model Diana Moldovan called Moo Moo. Can you tell us more about this business venture and what sort of cuisine does it offer?
AD: This happened about 3 years ago and it's a healthy bio restaurant. I'm not involved at the moment but two more have opened since.

IMA: What are your passions and interests outside of modelling and fashion?
AD: I take a lot of online courses, from archaeology to psychology to public speaking and humanities. The web is your oyster nowadays and I'll save "real university" time for later. I love a good workout so I've tried everything out there and I often joke that becoming a fitness instructor will be my back-up plan! I'd love to have more time to surf. I'm also interested in languages. I speak three fluently and I can play with French and Italian but I really intend to perfect them this year as well as learn basic Mandarin and finally play with my guitar that is currently covered with dust at home.

IMA: How would you describe your street style, and if you could have walked off the runway with any of the looks that you wore this past season, which collection would it have come from?
AD: My style is surf chick has baby with Rick Owens, and is Isabel Marant the God Mother? And rather basic/classic when travelling. During NYFW I step it up some days since I have full access to my closet. There's so much to love, everything at Céline, Prada, Stella McCartney, Isabel Marant, and Louis Vuitton (I didn't do the latter show but I've been shooting some pieces and I'm loving it all!).

IMA: What makes you "Inoubliable"?
AD: I'll let you answer this one for me! ;-)

Clear Cut - Ashleigh Good

Inoubliable Model Army derives particular satisfaction in witnessing the evolution of a model as he/she makes the journey from being a relative unknown to a celebrated darling of the fashion set. One newcomer who has undergone an incredible transformation in confidence and physical appearance, is the rough Kiwi diamond Ashleigh Good. IMA met the twenty-one year old New Zealander during the Spring/Summer 2013 season at castings for Altuzarra and Oscar de la Renta. At the time, Good sported a blunt fringe and shoulder length hair which did little to compliment her extraordinary bone structure and haunting icy baby blues. Following an inconsistent show season in New York which saw the 183 cm debuting at Alexander Wang followed by singular appearances at Theysken's Theory and Louise Goldin, Good's runway options improved considerably in London and Milan with appearances at Acne, Christopher Kane, Giles, Erdem, Versus, Marni, and Missoni. It wasn't until the final leg of the Spring/Summer 2013 season that Good showed her true colours, emerging in Paris at Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen, Pedro Lourenco, and Givenchy with a dramatic make-over in the form of a nape grazing bob which rendered her instantly recognisable and more importantly memorable in any show line-up.

During the ten months since our initial encounter, Good has emerged as one of the most sought after faces on the international runway circuit, logging a blistering trail through 65 show bookings at the recent Fall/Winter 2013 collections. Good was the muse of choice for many design houses, opening for Kaufmanfranco, Thakoon, Fendi, MaxMara, Cédric Charlier, Chanel, and Giambattista Valli. An avalanche of editorial bookings rapidly followed suit for CR Fashion Book, Russh, Australian Vogue, American Harper's Bazaar, Vogue Italia, German Vogue, Russian Numéro, and W. With the Fall/Winter 2013 campaign season unfolding, Good has already surfaced in two blue chip campaign offerings for MaxMara and Chanel, confirming her status as one of the few breakthrough runway stars to consolidate with key editorial and campaign slots. Designer Karl Lagerfeld is clearly enamoured with the androgynous beauty's tough chic, having photographed her for German Vogue, Russian Numéro, and for Chanel's Fall/Winter 2013 campaign. Good's meteoric rise through modelling's ranks reflects the significance of projecting an aesthetic that is inspirational to designers and casting directors, combined with a rough around the edges natural beauty and a quiet confidence that requires nurturing over time.
