Exclusive Interview - Lauren English

Canadian newcomer Lauren English made an auspicious debut just over a year ago as an Alexander Wang exclusive at the Fall/Winter 2013 collections. Based on that singular 'golden ticket' booking, English found herself in high rotation walking the runway for Balenciaga, Loewe, Céline, Paco Rabane, Maison Martin Margiela, Acne, and Elie Saab amongst others. During the recent Spring/Summer 2014 season, consolidation was clearly on English's mind with the twenty-one year old IMG-repped beauty logging a solid twenty show bookings. English's modelling achievements are remarkable given that she was discovered only three years ago at an open call held by her mother agency Elmer Oslen Model Management. English's chiselled bone structure, razor sharp cheekbones, and powerful 180 cm frame clearly struck a chord with agency owner Elmer Olsen who signed her on first sight.

Since the Spring/Summer 2014 show season, English has steadily racked up a diverse selection of editorial clients including the British and Russian editions of Vogue, the Gentlewoman, D La Reppublica, and Indie publications Grit, Husk, and Clash Magazine. English's versatility and her ability to convey a myriad of emotions via the camera's lens are complimented by her desire to continually push the limits of her modelling ability. Aside from her obvious physical allure, it is perhaps English's authenticity and the warm appreciation that she displays towards her agents, colleagues, industry supporters, and fans which defines her. English caught up exclusively with IMA during the Paris Fall/Winter 2014 collections to chat about the power of exclusives, her love of all things from vegan cookies to oversized sweaters to sightseeing during Fashion Week, and the value of being forced out of one's comfort zone.

Inoubliable Model Army (IMA): Hi Lauren, thank you for chatting to IMA and congrats on an impressive Spring/Summer 2014 season. Were you pleased with how your second show season unfolded?
Lauren English (LE): I am very pleased with my show season this go around! I feel that the more time that passes, the better understanding I have and greater appreciation I gain for the industry and the people within it. I am very lucky to have walked in the shows that I did.

IMA: As a relatively new face to modelling, would you mind filling in IMA on your personal backstory?
LE: I was born in Brampton, Ontario which is where I currently still live. Although I'm usually only there for a week or two at times between travelling, I would definitely still call it home. Right now I am 21. I started modelling when I was about 18 when I first signed with Elmer Olsen Models in Toronto. I met with Elmer Olsen during an open call and he signed me on the spot because he said that he saw big potential in me. My background is Scottish and Romanian, although the endless jokes of being English from my last name are never-ending!

IMA: You were launched on the international modelling circuit during the Fall/Winter 2013 season as an exclusive for Alexander Wang. What are your thoughts on the power of exclusives to make or break a new model's career?
LE: I was extremely fortunate to have landed an exclusive in Alex's show. He has been known to jump start many a girl's careers, which I strongly feel he had a big part in mine. Being an exclusive in any show as a new face I think is one of the best things that can happen to a model on the international runway circuit. It forces you out into the spotlight for casting directors and bloggers everywhere to see.

IMA: At the past Spring/Summer 2014 season you logged runway mileage at Alexander Wang in addition to Richard Chai Love, Peter Som, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Christopher Kane, Erdem, Kaufman Franco, Les Copains, and Missoni to name but a few! What were your personal favourite recollections of the Spring/Summer 2014 season?
LE: It truly is hard to pick a favourite because every collection is so unique in their own way. Alexander Wang is always one to look forward to because he himself is such a humble, down-to-earth person to work with. His shows are very elaborate with music and the atmosphere he creates, not to mention I would wear everything. Being my first season in London, I was lucky to have the opportunity to walk for another amazing designer Christopher Kane. His collection featured many beautiful pieces that are versatile and easy to wear. Strutting down a multi-levelled, mirrored runway while walking to Pink Floyd in a gorgeous outfit, it was hard not to feel like a million bucks.

IMA: Fashion Week is an extreme test of endurance both physically and mentally! What are your survival tips for getting through Fashion Week, and how do you decompress in the first few days following show season?
LE: I think one of the biggest tips for staying sane during Fashion Week is keeping in touch on a regular basis with my family and friends back home. It's great knowing that I have such a big support system. Their constant reminder of how proud and happy they are of me always puts a smile on my face during those crazy weeks. Another biggie is spending as much of the little down time I get in the gym. Working out is a huge stress reliever for me. Post-Fashion Week getting a massage and having a big meal full of the things that are not part of my meal plan is the best!

IMA: This season you ran the full gamut of the show circuit in all four fashion capitals. Did you find any time to do sightseeing in between castings and shows? Of the four cities, was there one that you felt a closer affinity towards?
LE: I was very busy towards the beginning of the month, luckily I managed to squeeze in a few hours of site-seeing during my first weekend in New York when my mom came to visit. We went to a few popular posts but being able to show her Times Square for her first time was really great. I had quite a bit of down time in Paris which was a nice change from my previous season of seeing everything from a car window. It's rare that you get free time to see and appreciate the beauty of these cities so I was very happy I could be a tourist for once! Since working in London for my first time during the Summer, I definitely fell in love and would have to say it's my favourite of the four. I plan to move there in the future!

IMA: The modelling and fashion industries  are a high pressured adult world in which young individuals are forced to navigate. What are your views on the New York State's recent passing of the new Child Labour Laws which provide protection for models 16 years and under from unsafe, unhealthy, and unlawful working terms and conditions?
LE: As a young adult working and travelling around the world on my own I still undergo feelings of major pressure and stress from the industry, so I can only imagine how models 16 and under would feel. At that age you don't really have a voice for yourself and you don't think to speak up when you feel something isn't right. The law is long over-due and could be one of the most beneficial things for young models. I believe this is such a relief for models and especially for their parents.

IMA: During your relatively short tenure as a model, what have you found most surprising about the industry in which you inhabit?
LE: People are very friendly! Well, the majority for that matter. Coming into the modelling industry I had no idea what to expect really once I started travelling on a regular basis. So I was surprised to see how nice and welcoming everyone was.

IMA: A big misconception about models is that they don't eat! IMA hears that you are an accomplished cook, tell us more about this passion of your's and what are some of your most popular recipes?
LE: I can definitely vouch that we eat... and we eat a lot! I would say my three favourite recipes to concoct would firstly be my vegan cookies... I have a huge sweet tooth so I created my own four ingredient recipe. I also love to make omelettes and different types of stir-fry dishes.

IMA: Recently you've appeared in editorials for the Gentlewoman, Clash Magazine, Grit, Husk, and the British and Russian editions of Vogue. Have you gotten used to seeing images of yourself in print and what do you appreciate most about the print component of modelling?
LE: I don't think I'll ever get used to opening a magazine and seeing myself! It's a very cool and accomplished feeling every time. I like to collect all my published work because I think it's great to hold onto for the future and compare my work from start to finish. Having done my fair share of look books and other online stuff is great but unfortunately it doesn't stay up forever. So having something tangible that I can hold onto and show my family and friends is something I appreciate the most about print.

IMA: The relationship between a photographer and his/her subject is unique, and requires an exchange of confidence and ideas. What have been some of your favourite modelling experiences and are there any key photographers whose vision you particularly admire?
LE: I've worked with many talented photographers over the years but I will always remember my first test shoot in New York with William Lords. Walking into his studio, not knowing what to expect just like any other shoot. Will pushed me out of my comfort zone, but in a good way of course. To be honest I was pretty intimidated by him at first haha. There was some yelling, some laughing, and bonding. But by the end of the shoot he had got expressions and movements out of me that I felt I wasn't able to give photographers in the past because they didn't push me. I appreciate that he took me away from what I was comfortable with because that's what makes you grow as a model. Will is a great photographer and friend with a strong passion for his career.

IMA: Toronto is a city known for its multi-ethnic population, and also has an impeccable track record of producing remarkable modelling exports. What is your take on the Spring/Summer 2014 season's sudden embrace of ethnic diversity and did you notice any other discernible casting trends throughout the season?
LE: I never quite understood why in the past diversity was obviously not there. I think it's amazing to see that casting directors and designers are finally changing their ways. When a close friend told me last year that it was difficult for her to book big shows because of her skin colour I thought it was ridiculous. So I am more then thrilled to say the least, that ethnic diversity exploded this past season.

IMA: Your mother agency Elmer Olsen has a formidable reputation of discovering and nurturing new modelling talent. How did Elmer Olsen prepare you for the international modelling stage, and now that you are represented globally by IMG Models, have you developed and appreciation for the scale of the behind the scenes work that goes into managing a model's career?
LE: Elmer is amazing at what he does and truly knows what it takes to prepare a girl to meet international agents and launch their career. If you're willing to give back just as much hard work and dedication as he invests in you, then there is hope that your career could/will go somewhere. It was hard to get to where I am right now but I am so grateful for everything he has done for me up to this point. If I had been told at the start of my career that I would eventually be travelling the world on a regular basis and signed internationally to one of the biggest agencies, I would never have believed it haha...

IMA: A model's presentation is vital both on and off the runway. How has your fashion aesthetic evolved as a result of your industry exposure? How would you describe your street style, and which three designers are you currently obsessing over?
LE: I've definitely come a long way from my all black uniform of skinny's and a tank top, which is the typical casting attire. Over the years of my career, I would say my closet has evolved a lot and I've donated several bags of my old clothes that I couldn't part with for years. I don't know how to describe my style because I tend to dress according to my moods. I have my fair share of comfy days that consist of wearing mostly leggings and oversized sweaters. But otherwise I like to look a little dressy, whether it be some leather pants and a cute top or a pair of oversized jeans and a blazer. I love 3.1 Phillip Lim, Alexander Wang, and an independent designer Sui Yuan who I found in a small store on Brick Lane in London.

IMA: What makes you "Inoubliable" (Unforgettable)?
LE: That's a hard one to answer because I think it's more about who's watching and what they believe is memorable about me. With so much competition in the industry, I think having a great personality and sense of humour is important, but also staying humble and true to yourself will make you stand out and be truly "Unforgettable" in the eyes of the fashion world.

Top 10 Newcomers F/W 2014 - Ronja Furrer

For industry veteran Ronja Furrer the path to her stellar run at the Fall/Winter 2014 collections has been paved by years of grunt modelling and an iron will to succeed. Discovered via the Elite Model Look contest in 2006, Swiss-born Furrer placed in the top 15 finalists before relocating to Paris to begin her modelling career. Furrer attained moderate success with editorial appearances for German Elle, GQ, and Marie Claire coupled by a Spring/Summer 2012 campaign slot for Ralph Lauren Denim & Supply. Turns on the runway at the Spring/Summer 2011 collections for Pierre Cardin and Reed Krakoff's Fall/Winter 2011 show hinted at Furrer's potential. A switch of representation to IMG Models in November 2013 precipitated a major overhaul and rebranding of Furrer's image in time for the Fall/Winter 2014 season. An avalanche of bookings for Rag & Bone, Altuzarra, Derek Lam, Marc Jacobs, Proenza Schouler, and Narciso Rodriguez, unequivocally declared Furrer the most coveted "newcomer" of the New York collections. Across all four fashion capitals, Furrer blazed a blue chip trail appearing at J.W. Anderson, Burberry Prosum, Fendi, Prada, Versace, Roberto Cavalli, Emilio Pucci, Balenciaga, and Lanvin proving that incredible things do indeed come to those who wait.

Top 10 Newcomers F/W 2014 - Riley Montana

New York Model Management's Riley Montana was the newcomer with the most to prove at the Fall/Winter 2014 collections. Interest in Montana in the lead up to Fashion Week reached fever pitch courtesy of a Spring/Summer 2014 Balenciaga campaign berth shot by Mert & Marcus, and riveting editorial appearances for Love, Paris Vogue, CR Fashion Book, French Numéro, i-D, and W Magazine. The twenty-two year old Detroit native's modelling resumé is astounding given that she has been modelling for less than a year. The fashion industry appears to be completely enamoured by Montana's spectacular skin tone, high sculpted cheekbones, and feline features with designers and casting directors clamouring to feature her in their Fall/Winter 2014 show line-ups. Throughout the three fashion capitals, Montana has proven to be one of the most consistent players, logging runway mileage at Oscar de la Renta, Anna Sui, DKNY, Rodarte, Mary Katrantzou, Peter Pilotto, Preen, Bottega Veneta, Trussardi, Ermanno Scervino, and Fausto Puglisi. In the final leg of the Paris Fall/Winter 2014 collections, Montana showed her true mettle with ultra blue chip appearances at Balmain, Nina Ricci, and Rochas. No doubt Montana will end Fashion Week on a high note with designer Riccardo Tisci's backing at Givenchy.

Top 10 Newcomers F/W 2014 - Annemijn Dijs

Dutch newcomer Annemijn Dijs first landed on IMA's radar at the Australian Spring/Summer 2013 collections when she walked for a slew of local designers including Alex Perry, Manning Cartell, and Easton Pearson. During the New York Spring/Summer 2014 shows Dijs resurfaced at the Natalie Joos Castings where IMA was in attendance, displaying a glowing confidence and disarming beauty. However it was while IMA assisted at castings for Oscar de la Renta in December 2013 that Dijs showed true conviction and signs of a shift in her modelling trajectory, landing her first major blue chip bookings for Oscar de la Renta and Balenciaga's Pre-Fall 2014 Presentations. With industry buzz surrounding the nineteen year old Rotterdam native, Dijs made the leap to modelling's major league at the current Fall/Winter 2014 collections with a pristine show list that has so far included appearances at Alexander Wang, Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs, Diesel Black Gold, Giles, Jonathan Saunders, Missoni, Aquilano Rimondi, Céline, and opening slots at Antonio Marras and Maison Martin Margiela.

Discovered at age 15 by Dune Agency in Amsterdam and represented globally by IMG Model Management, Dijs committed to modelling full-time upon completion of her high school education a little over a year ago and has grown immeasurably over that period. Having become acquainted with Dijs over the past year, it is particularly gratifying to witness her evolution from runway novice to bonafide star in the making. On the runway, in print, and in the flesh, Dijs emits a powerful sensual androgyny with her lanky 178 cm frame, piercing blue eyes, and prominent jawline. Dijs' unconventional and versatile beauty has proven to be a key advantage amongst the sea of homogenous pretty faces in abundance on the Fall/Winter 2014 runways. Dijs'"model-as-muse" propensity, unflinching beauty, positive attitude, and fearless work ethic land her squarely on IMA's Top 10 Newcomers List for the Fall/Winter 2014 season.

Top 10 Newcomers F/W 2014 - Kate Grigoreva

Classic beauties will always have a place in the fashion industry and for twenty-five year old Russian newcomer Kate Grigoreva, this translated into an auspicious debut opening for Donna Karan at the Fall/Winter 2014 collections. The former Russia's Next Top Model 2012 runner-up received a high fashion make-over courtesy of appearances at Oscar de la Renta, Ralph Lauren, Gucci, Versace, Roberto Cavalli, and Dolce & Gabbana. When IMA met Grigoreva at the Fall/Winter 2014 castings for Oscar de la Renta, the Lions NYC-repped beauty screamed commercial to high fashion cross-over possibilities of epic proportions. With her classic blonde hair, blue-eyed, and square jaw combination not to mention the kind of banging 180 cm body that would send Victoria's Secret honchos into a casting frenzy, Grigoreva possesses the kind of commercial appeal that sells. During the final leg of Paris Fashion Week, Grigoreva pulled out an additional trump card via dazzling blue chip appearances at Stella McCartney, Givenchy, Viktor & Rolf, Céline, Barbara Bui, Isabel Marant, and Giambattista Valli displaying the kind of high fashion meets sexy bombshell apropos that brings an added dimension of intrigue to any show-line up. With only a few days left before the Fall/Winter 2014 collections draw to a close, Grigoreva resolutely nabs the final spot on IMA's Top 10 Newcomers List for the season.

Honourable Mentions F/W 2014 - Ysaunny Brito

Ysaunny Brito from the Dominican Republic merits an honourable mention for her stellar run throughout the Fall/Winter 2014 collections. Brito commanded industry attention with her exquisite almond shaped eyes, square jawline, and high angular cheekbones as she graced the runways of Marc Jacobs, Giles, Burberry Prorsum Prada, Bottega Veneta, DSquared2, Gareth Pugh, Céline, Paco Rabane, and Maison Margiela. Discovered by her mother agency Ossygeno Models Management at an open casting call, Brito competed in the Elite Model Look 2012 competition and finished amongst the Top 15 finalists. The 178 cm ingenue's spectacular debut at the Paris Spring/Summer 2013 collections with a show list which included turns on the runway at Alexander McQueen, Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, Kenzo, and Giambattista Valli, set great expectations for the current Fall/Winter 2014 season. During the castings for Oscar de la Renta's Pre-Fall 2014 Presetnation, Brito blew IMA away with her flawless runway swagger, unassuming beauty, and her delightful personality. Following a slow start in New York, Brito gained momentum in the three remaining fashion capitals securing key slots in the shows with the most industry clout. Recent editorial exposure in 10 Magazine and V, in addition to Brito's impressive runway resumé point towards promising campaign and editorial options in fallout from the Fall/Winter 2014 collections.

Exclusive Interview - Lisanne de Jong

$

Dutch veteran Lisanne de Jong made a triumphant return to the runway at the Spring/Summer 2014 collections following a year long hiatus from modelling. The twenty-three year old green-eyed blonde imbued the runways of Hervé Leger, Rodarte, Christopher Kane, Peter Pilotto, Bottega Veneta, Chloé, and Hermés with a commanding presence and self-assuredness that come with a certain level of industry and more importantly life experience. Scouted at age fourteen, the academically-minded de Jong placed modelling on the back burner until graduating from high school before launching herself into modelling full-time in 2008. Following careful development and guidance by her mother agency Ulla Models in Amsterdam, de Jong debuted at the Spring/Summer 2010 New York collections walking for BCBG Max Azria, Hervé Leger, and Ports 1961 before scoring a Prada exclusive in Milan which propelled her into modelling's limelight. At the Paris Spring/Summer 2010 collections in Paris, there was no doubt as to de Jong's blue chip exclusivity with spectacular bookings at Balenciaga and Miu Miu the latter for which she opened.

Fast-forward five years and de Jong has run modelling's full gamut appearing in campaigns for Balenciaga, Missoni, Céline, and Burberry Black Label. Editorial appearances for a diverse array of publications including W Magazine, Dazed & Confused, Interview, French Revue de Modes, British Harper's Bazaar, Wonderland, 10 Magazine, Russh, and the Chinese and Russian editions of Vogue attest to de Jong's stunning versatility on film. Equally impressive is de Jong's sleek 178 cm runway perfect proportions and the womanly aura she emits both on and off the catwalk. Currently a first year university graduate of studies in Psychology, de Jong's comprehension of the inner machinations of the fashion industry and her place in it lend her an added dimension of interest. Smart, conscientious, and grateful for the opportunities that have presented thus far in her modelling career, de Jong is clearly a long distance player. IMA caught up with de Jong in the lead up to the Fall/Winter 2014 season to chat about the impetus for her return to the runway, modelling's complex mind games, and shooting the breeze backstage at Hermés in between massages and guitar renditions.

Inoubliable Model Army (IMA): Hi Lisanne, thank you for chatting with IMA! The Spring/Summer 2014 season signalled your return to fashion's runways following a brief hiatus in 2012. How did you feel getting back on the show circuit and were you pleased with how the season developed?
Lisanne de Jong (LDJ): I was very happy to be back on the runways! I was in the school banks for a year and I missed the adrenaline and excitement that you get from doing the shows. I felt very lucky to be able to walk some nice shows during Fashion Week again. And now that I am a bit older I can appreciate and enjoy it even more than before!

IMA: Would you mind sharing your backstory with IMA?
LDJ: I am 23 years old and from a small town in Holland called Muiderberg. I have been modelling for five years now with a break in between for over a year. I was discovered on the streets of Amsterdam while shopping with a friend. I was 14 years old at the time. My parents wanted me to focus on finishing high school first so I did. After completing high school I started modelling full-time and everything went from there. I decided to take a break because I wanted to focus completely on my studies. I studied psychology for a year in Amsterdam and have a first years degree which is referred to in Holland as "Propedeuse". It was good to focus on that. Now I appreciate modelling even more. While I was in school I missed the travelling, meeting all the different people, the work itself, and my friends around the world. So I decided to make a return ;-)

IMA: Your Spring/Summer 2014 show list included appearances at Hervé Léger, Rodarte, Reed Krakoff, Julien David, Christopher Kane, Just Cavalli, Bottega Veneta, Missoni, Guy Laroche, Chloé, and Hermés. What were your personal Spring/Summer 2014 highlights?
LDJ: That is a very tough call! I was a semi-exclusive for Chloé, I worked with them all week doing looks, and the hair and makeup test. I got to know the team and saw how the collection came together. That was a special experience. Also doing Hermés for the first time was great! I loved the whole atmosphere backstage. It was possible to get a Thai massage, there was good food, and it was the final show of the season! It was a very nice weather-wise that day too. Julia Nobis had her guitar with her and was playing songs in the grass in the sun while all the girls sat around listening and relaxing. That was a very special moment. The show was beautiful and I loved the catwalk surrounded by palm trees and other exotic plants. It fitted very well with the collection.

IMA: You burst onto the international modelling scene during the Spring/Summer 2010 season as a Prada exclusive followed by opening slots at  Miu Miu, Max Azria, and Philosphy di Alberta Ferretti. Do you feel in a way that you have come full circle, and what changes have you noticed in the industry?
LDJ: It feels like another accomplishment for me and some kind of full circle I think. But this is not the end, I hope I can continue to keep working on exciting projects and shows. I expected it to be harder returning to modelling and the runways. So I was just very happy that people were still enthusiastic to see me. There have been some changes. For example casting directors that cast different shows now. Designers that switched. I also feel like it's not the end of the world if you are a bit older as a model now. There are not as many 14 year old girls around anymore. I noticed more girls achieving momentum on the runway who have already been modelling for a long time like Ieva Laguna and Anouk Hagemeijer. As for trends I think we are living in a fast world these days and the fashion industry changes constantly!

IMA: One aspect that hasn't changed is the fashion industry's obsession with Dutch models. Why do you feel Dutch girls continue to be such a driving force on modelling?
LDJ: I think it is because Dutch girls are very down-to-earth and easy to work with. If I look at myself and my Dutch model friends, we just like to have a good time but also work hard.

IMA: There appears to be no set formula nowadays for a model's path to success. Some girls experience instant success due to the power of exclusives, while others make the cross-over from commercial modelling to the high fashion realm, and many models also hit their stride professionally in their mid to late 20s bringing a maturity and breadth of life experience to the fore. Is success all the more sweeter for you the second time around and what do you feel are the keys to longevity in the fickle world of modelling?
LDJ: It is a different kind of success the second time, I feel like I have to prove myself even more - that I am here again and I am good in what I do. So I feel happy to still be recognised as a model. I think the key to longevity is to believe in yourself, to be nice to people, and work hard! I think you really have to want it in order to continue to work because there are so many girls nowadays that you can be replaced quickly. That means travelling a lot, keeping in shape, and if you have a little dip don't give up.

IMA: Your resumé includes editorial appearances for British Harper's Bazaar, V, Dazed & Confused, Russh, W, and Interview. Has there been a favourite editorial shoot to date, and how has your posing and relationship with the camera evolved since you started in the industry?
LDJ: I loved doing the "In Bloom" Story for Dazed & Confused with Viviane Sassen and Katie Schillingford. I was jumping around in the tulip fields in Holland and I think the pictures turned out amazing! Another one I really like I did recently for French Elle with Bjarne Jonasson and Tamara Taichman. Everything fitted together with the styling and photography. I am very happy with how the pictures turned out. I definitely have much more confidence standing in front of a camera now then when I was 18. Now I know what is expected and how to move well.

IMA: Having already shot campaigns for Balenciaga, Céline, Burberry Black Label, Missoni, and Hermés with industry heavyweights Steven Meisel, Juergen Teller, and Alasdair McLellan, what other career milestones do you hope to achieve in the future?
LDJ: Oh there are so many! I would love to be on a cover of Vogue. I really like French Vogue. Doing an editorial for them is something I hope to achieve one day. And of course, every model's big dream is to score a beauty contract ;-).

IMA: Your mother agency Ulla Models has chartered your modelling course to its current comeback success. What do you appreciate most about Ulla Models' management philosophy and approach?
LJD: I love that they are very supportive. Whenever I am upset about something or need a pep talk I can call my booker Michael and I know he will make me feel better. It's also nice that during Fashion Week there is always someone from Ulla Models in town so we have a nice dinner and especially during Fashion Week you need those moments of support.

IMA: The modelling industry offers few long-term possibilities for the hundreds of newcomers flooding the market each season. What advice would you offer to new model hopefuls?
LDJ: I would advise them that if this is really what they want, that they can get there but you need to believe in yourself and be motivated and determined because there are times when you work less and things don't go as you want but at that moment you shouldn't give up and instead think of ways to get even better in what you do.

IMA: Fashion is a big part of a model's appeal. How would you describe your fashion sensibility and which key designers are currently on high rotation in your wardrobe?
LDJ: It's hard to describe my style. For example, one day I can wear black leather pants and motor boots and look like a tomboy while another day I can wear something very classic and chic. I guess it really depends on my mood on the day and also the clients that I have to go and see. The designers that are on high oration on my closet are Acne, Helmut Lang, and Balenciaga (from when Nicolas was still there). I have quite a bag collection from doing the show in the past!

IMA: Physical scrutiny and assessment are part and parcel of a model's daily life. How do you handle being judged on face value and is it difficult to maintain a clear sense of self through it all?
LDJ: Maybe that's what made me so interested in psychology ;-). I know a lot of models that actually told me that if they would study they would consider psychology. I thought that was quite funny but it makes sense. You get judged constantly and at some point you learn how not to take it personal. In the beginning it was very hard for me but now I guess I am used to it. It's part of the job! We basically go for job interviews a couple of times a week! I think one important thing to stay grounded in this is to have a life next to it. For example I have my friends, family and boyfriend back in Holland. I have different hobbies like horse-riding and pilates. This helps me to keep a normal sense of self.

IMA: What are the most valuable life lessons that modelling has taught you?
LDJ: Live in the moment and enjoy every moment! Life goes fast and it's a shame to constantly work about the future. Also don't forget where you came from and cherish the special bonds with your loved ones, family, and friends. In the end you will only find happiness when you are happy with yourself.

IMA: What makes you "Inoubliable" (Unforgettable)?
IMA: I think I am calm, loyal, and down-to-earth. I guess some people like that ;-).

Now that the month long frenzy of Fashion Week madness has subsided IMA turns its attention to an editorial featuring one of the Spring/Summer 2014 season's most illuminating faces. British newcomer Malaika Firth comes up for air in i-D Magazine's "Smile, happy looks good on you!" editorial captured by photographer Sean Thomas. The Kenyan-born British raised newcomer is pretty as a picture styled by Julia Sarr Jamois in eclectic feminine pieces from the Spring/Summer 2014 collections of Saint Laurent, Prada, Céline, Moschino, and Balenciaga. The twenty year old bi-racial beauty has emerged as one of the industry's most consistently in demand new faces amassing a staggering 49 show tally at the recent Fall/Winter 2014 collections. Over the past year Firth has snagged blue chip campaign slots for Prada, Valentino, Burberry Prorsum, and Marc Jacobs Fragrance. Meanwhile editorial bookings for Interview, W, CR Fashion Book, Love, and the British, American, and French editions of Vogue all point towards Firth's undeniable crossover from runway newbie to bonafide "model of the moment" with true long-term prospects. Represented by New York Model Management and Premier Models, Firth is well on her way to becoming a household name following her sensational debut appearance at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.

Once Were Warriors - Lexi Boling, Devon Windsor, & Katlin Aas

V Magazine keeps the beat going following the Fall/Winter 2014 collections with an editorial featuring three of the season's most requested faces. Models of the moment Lexi Boling, Devon Windsor, and Katlin Aas are photographed by Sølve Sundsbø for "Tribal Beat" wearing elaborate tribal-inspired ensembles styled by Beat Bolliger. Designs by Tom Ford, Céline, Louis Vuitton, Chloé, Calvin Klein, and Alexander McQueen form the battle attire for the trio of brazen beauties before Sundsbø's magical lens. Industry veteran Katlin Aas from Estonia has been a regular runway fixture since she entered modelling's fray in 2009. Aas' pale milky complexion and contrasting green eyes and brunette mane proved a hit at the Fall/Winter 2014 collections with a 52 show tally for the IMG repped-beauty. Relative newcomers Lexi Boling and Devon Windsor both possess a striking androgynous features which are challenging the industry's perception of American beauty. Boling and Windsor's lean long silhouettes, blonde hair, and long chiselled visages have landed the pair together in multiple editorials for V and Interview Magazine. Both model's possess stunning versatility, having undergone a dramatic transformation from tanned all-American teen to runway warrior goddess, which forebodes well for their long-term modelling prospects.

Wolf Whistle - Emma Champtaloup

During the Fall/Winter 2014 season, IMA bore witness to an astounding number of newcomers, second season wonders, and established faces at castings for New York Fashion Week. Standing out amongst the sea of pretty faces was twenty-five year old New Zealander Emma Champtaloup. In the midst of her first full show season after a stunning debut at the Spring/Summer 2014 collections where she appeared exclusively at Marc Jacobs, Proenza Schouler, Prada, and Givenchy, Champtaloup was one of the most buzzed about newcomers of the season. IMA met the softly spoken Auckland native at the castings for Oscar de la Renta and was immediately enchanted by her gentle, soulful beauty and kind spirited nature. Signed by DNA Models in New York, Champtaloup stands at an imposing 181 cm with broad shoulders, a perfectly ovular face, hazel brown eyes, and a shoulder grazing bob. Currently studying Esoteric Medicine and Healing, a therapy which focuses on ancient Chinese medicine and the relationship between the mind and body, Champtaloup is clearly in sync with hers citing "Intuition" as her best feature. This month Champtaloup stars in a divine bathing suit spread shot by Collier Schorr and accompanied by a profile interview for The Gentlewoman. Champtaloup poses in modest swimwear styled by Alastair McKimm from the Spring/Summer 2014 collections of Rag & Bone, Calvin Klein, Hermés, Donna Karan, and Jason Wu. Chamtpaloup combines a subtle sensuality, powerful inquisitive gaze, and relaxed poses remaining perfectly in sync with the Gentlewoman's understated beauty aesthetic.

Wander Lust - Ava Smith

With the changing of the seasons from Winter to Spring, IMA's attention turns toward warmer pastures and what better way to get inspired then by Dansk Magazine's editorial set in Lima, Peru, starring the beautiful Ava Smith. Smith provides the perfect blank canvas as she takes on the role of an eccentric artist while exploring the teeming city environs while decked out in selected pieces from the Spring/Summer 2014 collections of Prada,  Proenza Scouler, Chanel, and others styled by Almudena Guerra. Smith blends seamlessly into the pulsating city landscape as she wanders the back streets, lingering in doorways, seeking shelter from the heat in tranquil courtyards, and venturing into a local barber shop. Neumann captures the serene beauty of Smith as he observes the Wilhelmina-repped American on her journey of discovery. Smith elevates the editorial from mere fashion story to one that encompasses art, travel, lifestyle, and fantasy as she takes on the dual roles of model as muse and artist. With streaks of paint coarsing through her upswept hair, Smith is quite simply beguiling as she stares down the camera's lens with her cobalt blue eyes with a look of pure wanderlust.

Two of IMA's favourite faces of the Fall/Winter 2014 collections share the spotlight in an editorial for Vogue Italia's March 2014 issue. New York Model Management's Malaika Firth and Next Model Management's Lera Tribel are photographed by Sølve Sundsbø for "An up-to-date Elegance" wearing elaborate embroidered Valentino gowns from the label's Spring/Summer 2014 collection. Both models are rendered virtually unrecognisable styled in wigs with blunt fringe and plaited pigtails and neutral make-up. Malaika Firth is emerging as a true contender for true supermodel status amongst the latest crop of new faces trawling fashion's runways. An editorial darling with appearances in the French, American, British and now Italian editions of Vogue, Firth is also in the enviable position of having scored four lucrative Spring/Summer 2014 campaign slots for Valentino, Prada, Burberry Prorsum, and Marc Jacobs Fragrance. The super elegant Russian Lera Tribel backed up her stellar Spring/Summer 2014 show season with an impressive 26 show tally at the recent Fall/Winter 2014 collections. Tribel's rich auburn red mane, feline-like grey/blue eyes, and pale alabaster complexion made her easy to identify in her appearances at Altuzarra, Marc Jacobs, Alberta Ferretti, Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino, and Chanel. Tribel and Firth possess a stunning versatility and classic beauty that appeals to both fashion denizens and the buying public.

Motors Running - Anna Ewers

Paris Fashion Week may be over but the fun and games are just about to begin for the latest crop of runway renegades as the Fall/Winter 2014 editorial and campaign season unfurls. Kicking off proceedings is the enigmatic German beauty Anna Ewers whose startling likeness to Claudia Schiffer has the fashion industry rippling with excitement at the hint of a return to the beauty aesthetic of the early 90s Supers. Twenty year old Ewers poses for photographer Mikael Jansson in a parking lot filled bumper-to-bumper with Mustang cars in metallic hues of neon red, green, and electric blue. With barely there bleached brows and hair styled in a simple centre part, Ewers' beauty outshines the metallic hotrods as she poses in Spring/Summer 2014 designs by Prada, Miu Miu, and Alexander Wang. The Freiburg native was fast-tracked to modelling's elite ranks from the second she set foot on the Spring/Summer 2014 runways opening for Alexander Wang. So enamoured with Ewers was the designer that he selected her to front his eponymously named label's Spring/Summer 2014 campaign shot by Steven Klein. Back-to-back Prada Spring/Summer 2014 and Resort 2014 campaigns in addition to a ubiquitous editorial presence via the pages of W, i-D, Love, CR Fashion Book, and the British, French, American, and Italian editions of Vogue, unanimously declare Ewers as a bonafide Super in the making.

Rwandan born French newcomer Nadja Giramata is a commanding presence in the February 2014 issue of Grazia Magazine posing alongside a posse of gargantuan bodybuilders. Twenty-two year old Giramata runs rings around her hirsute male counterparts in the series of striking black and white portraits shot by Christian Anwander. Wearing form-fitting designs by Versace, Louis Vuitton, Ermanno Scervino, Lanvin, and Anthony Vaccarello styled by Teddy Czopp and Orset Laure, Giramata's 179 cm silhouette, never-ending limbs and dark velvety skin provide the supportive framework for her cumbersome male props. IMA's first encounter with Giramata was at the Natalie Joos Castings during the Spring/Summer 2014 season, where she was a standout due to her understated chic style, magnificent walk, and classic beauty. Giramata's compelling runway bravado has landed her on the catwalk for clients including Tom Ford, Carolina Herrera, Richard Chai Love, Daks, ICB by Prabal Gurung, and Band of Outsiders. Giramata's modelling resumé continues to pick up speed with a Spring/Summer 2014 campaign berth for  Philipp Plein and recent editorial bookings for Pop, Garage, Veoir Magazine, Husk, and Used. Grazia France's latest editorial instalment is elevated to a whole other level thanks to Giramata's high fashion moxie and stunning modelling ability.

Berlin or Bust - Franzi Mueller

Following a weekend spent reconnecting with my former home city of Berlin where I lived for three years prior to relocating to Copenhagen, I felt that it was perfect timing to feature the stunning Berliner Franzi Mueller on IMA. The imposing androgynous beauty appears in an editorial for the Spring/Summer 2014 issue of How to Spend It captured by photographer Andrew Yee. Mueller displays a rare combination of powerful androgyny and simmering sensuality as she poses in signature pieces from the Spring/Summer 2014 collections of Céline, Gucci, Alexander McQueen, Prada, and Chanel. The statuesque twenty-two year old made her international runway debut opening for Calvin Klein at the Fall/Winter 2012 collections and landed on IMA's list of Top 10 Newcomers for the season. Mueller's aristocratic countenance and unmistakable sculptural bone structure continued to gain favour on the recent Fall/Winter 2014 runways with the IMG-repped beauty logging a blistering trail throughout her appearances in 44 show bookings. IMA adores Mueller's uncompromising beauty, stealth-like runway presence, and her compelling blend of fragility, strength, and undeniable Berlin cool.

Polish stunner Ola Rudnicka is the main attraction for Dutch Vogue's "Magic Star" editorial lensed by photographer Boe Marion. Performing a myriad of illusionist tricks using eggs, hand restraints, doves, and crates as props, Rudnicka maintains her "high fashion" composure while under pressure. Stylist Marije Goekoop ensures Rudnicka is dressed to impress in stellar looks from the Spring/Summer 2014 collections of Christian Dior, Haider Ackermann, Mulberry, Barbara Bui, Moschino, and Marc by Marc Jacobs. Nineteen year old Rudnicka was one of the most consistently booked newcomers of the Fall/Winter 2014 season racking up a mammoth show tally of 54 show bookings across the four fashion capitals. With her expressive baby blue eyes, porcelain-like complexion, and platinum blonde hair, Rudnicka was impossible to miss during her appearances at the shows with the most clout; Proenza Schouler, Hugo Boss, Narciso Rodriguez, Burberry Prosum, Christopher Kane, Emilio Pucci, Bottega Veneta, Louis Vuitton, Valentino, and Chanel. Represented by mother agency Model Plus in Warsaw and Next Model Management globally, Rudnicka is currently featured in Prada's Spring/Summer 2014 campaign lensed by Steven Meisel and has recently graced the pages of the Japanese, Dutch, French, British, and Italian editions of Vogue.

A Fresh Approach to Spring - Helena Suric

American Vogue's March 2014 issue unveils a smorgasbord of diverse modelling talent wearing the the prettiest vibrant prints just in time for the Spring/Summer 2014 season. While some of us may still battling head colds courtesy of the severe New York Winter or perhaps stocking up on hay-fever remedies in preparation for the transition to Spring, American Vogue launches full steam ahead into the new season with an exuberant cast of models comprised of veterans, established names, and new stars on the horizon. Photographer Craig McDean captures IMA favourites Suvi Koponen and Jourdan Dunn alongside newcomers Sam Rollinson, Xiao Wen Ju, Anna Ewers, and new American Vogue favourite Imaan Hammam for the series of dynamic studio portraits. IMA has noticed a discernible shift in American Vogue's roster of beauties over the past few issues with the return of familiar faces Suvi Koponen, Sasha Pivovarova, and Liya Kebede, and the welcome addition of a raft of modelling's freshest new faces including Imaan Hammam, Anna Ewers, Xiao Wen Ju, Cindy Bruna, Irene Hiemstra, Vanessa Axente, Amanda Murphy, and Grace Mahary. Credit should be attributed to new Booking's Director Helena Suric for imbuing American Vogue's pages with a much needed injection of vitality, the shock of the new, and diversity in its selection of models. Suric, formerly an agent at DNA Model Management, replaced former Booking Editor Valerie Bolster in late 2013 and has been vocal about her passion for models within the magazine's pages. In the fashion bible's February 2014 issue, Suric states emphatically, "Models help bring an editor's vision to life, and as Bookings Director I find it incredibly rewarding to be part of that process."

Full Throttle - Cameron Russell & Malaika Firth

Super photographer Mario Testino and two of modelling's most compelling beauties Cameron Russell and Malaika Firth set temperatures soaring in South Beach Miami for Paris Vogue's April 2014 issue. Cover model Russell and rising star Malaika Firth are styled to the hilt by Editor-in-Chief Emmanuelle Alt in sizzling swimwear and glam figure-revealing ensembles. Firth and Russell are magnetic as they pose for Testino perched on Harley Davidsons and strolling down the sun-kissed promenades of South Beach. Industry veteran Russell set pulses and minds racing with her brooding sensuality and stunning intellect when she spoke candidly about the industry's on-going perpetuation of discriminatory and unhealthy body images at a TED talk in 2012. The twenty-six year old Boston native has enjoyed incredible longevity with a modelling career spanning over a decade. Not content to rely on looks as her sole form of currency, Russell's resumé includes a Columbia University degree in Economics and Political Science. Equally beguiling is charismatic nineteen year old newcomer Malaika Firth who was born is Kenya and raised in Great Britain. Modelling for little more than two years, Firth has emerged as one of fashion's hottest properties having appeared in back-to-back Prada campaigns, in addition to scoring Spring/Summer 2014 campaign slots for Burberry Prorsum, Valentino, and Marc Jacobs fragrance. With powerhouse representation by Premier Models and New York Model Management, Firth left no doubt as to her intentions at the Fall/Winter 2014 collections amassing a staggering 49 show tally that had even the most jaded model aficionados proclaiming her as a true long-distance contender.

Exclusive Interview - Maarjan Ridalaan

Estonian newcomer Maarjan Ridalaan was discovered a little over a year ago while celebrating her 15th Birthday with family at a local pizzeria, and has since enjoyed a spectacular rise through industry ranks making her runway debut at Prada's Spring/Summer 2014 show. Ridalaan's haunting grey blue eyes, tempestuous pout, and elegant 175 cm frame have continued to captivate industry attention via promising editorial bookings for Purple Magazine and British Harper's Bazaar, and Isabel Marant Etoile's Spring/Summer 2014 Look Book. Ridalaan's fresh faced beauty, youthful spirit, and versatility in front of the camera are being carefully nurtured and introduced to the international market via a supreme management team led by mother agency LUV Models, Tess Models London, Elite Model Management Paris, and The Society Management NY. Currently based in London, Ridalaan has been steadily building up her portfolio testing with photographers while meeting with prospective clients. A classic beauty through and through, Ridalaan's ability to morph seamlessly between tomboyish indifference, to femme fatale, and young sophisticate is the trump card which will enable her to appeal to a broad range of runway and editorial clients. Equally impressive is Ridalaan's cool demeanour, endearing sweet spirit, and enthusiastic yet pragmatic approach to modelling. In between modelling assignments, Ridalaan took a moment to chat exclusively with IMA about her stunning Prada debut, modelling's harsh realities, and her innate love of music, acting, and astronomy.

Inoubliable Model Army (IMA): Hi Maarjan, thank you for chatting with IMA. Firstly congratulations on your stunning runway debut at Prada during the Spring/Summer 2014 season! How would you sum up your first show season and were you satisfied with how the season developed?
Maarjan Ridalaan (MR): Very nice chatting with you. Thank you! I still sometimes think like, "Wow, did it really happen?" I can't describe it, it was just wonderful. I'm more than pleased ;-)

IMA: As a brand spanking new face to modelling, would you mind filling in IMA on your backstory?
MR: I'm 16 years old. I'm from a summer capital of Estonia called Parnu which is a small town. I was discovered in Estonia by Barry Elkins and Enel Soeson from Luv Models while celebrating my 15th birthday in a pizza restaurant with my family. I was very surprised and couldn't really believe it in fact. I wasn't sure if modelling was something I wanted to do at the time. It took me more that a week to make a decision.

IMA: Describe your childhood and upbringing, and were you at all conscious of your beauty growing up?
MR: My childhood was unforgettable with a lot of action going on all the time haha...! I was born in Tallinn but moved when I was a year old to a little village called Vandra, where I spent most of my childhood. It's a place where all my family roots are from. I was not aware of my beauty growing up at all, being always that kind of girl who didn't care... I didn't wear any make-up. My hair was always a mess - so I guess that says it all.

IMA: You were one of the standout newcomers at Prada's Spring/Summer 2014 show. What was involved in the casting process and what was your reaction when you heard that you'd been confirmed for the show?
MR: As it was my first show ever, it was very confusing for me as I didn't truly understand what was going on. But when I was finally confirmed I had two emotions running through my mind... I was nervous and excited at the same time, but it was such a fun experience!

IMA: Competition during the Spring/Summer 2014 show season was intense with more newcomers than ever vying for limited runway spots. Did you find the experience of doing the rounds to castings daunting given that you literally have less than a minute to make a favourable impression on the powers that be?
MR: I don't really think so as it's always just a case of showing your book, walking, and the rest is not up to me anymore. The only thing I try to do is to make sure I get plenty of rest in order to look my best.

IMA: You also appeared in the Sonia Rykiel show (another iconic brand) during the Paris collections. Have you found your style sensibility has evolved as a result of your industry exposure? Which shows were you most blown away by during the Spring/Summer 2014 season?
MR: It sure has changed but it's still pretty casual. Sometimes I love to play with my look a little more but usually I like to keep it simple. I was in love with the Valentino collection, and I also liked the Alexander Wang and Balenciaga collections - it's my kind of style.

IMA: Beauty clearly runs in your family with your sister Lisanna also being a model placed with LUV Models. Does it help having someone so close to share your modelling experiences and challenges with?
MR: I'm sure it does. I can't wait for my younger sister to step into it. My dream is to teach her all about the industry and to travel together, that would be awesome!

IMA: You've been steadily building up your book with some impressive test shots by photographer Paul Morel, Thomas Babeau, and Michael Roses. Are there any key photographers that you have worked with who you felt captured you at your best?
MR: I think every shooting has offered me a new experience and every photographer has been able to capture me in a flattering way that is new and interesting for me.

IMA: In the relatively short amount of time that you have been modelling, what has surprised you most about the modelling and fashion industries?
MR: Everything I've learnt, because my impressions about modelling were absolutely different. Now I feel how it really is and I would love to learn more. Before I had never really understood how modelling truly works - it can be hard at times. A model needs to have a lot of self-discipline, determination and focus because this job can be really lonely. People in this industry can be very hard, in the end it is just business for everybody and I try to appreciate every moment while I am doing this job. To stay centred, grounded, and happy within myself.

IMA: The Prada Spring/Summer 2014 show was an incredible fusion of fashion, artistic expression, and radical feminism. What was the mood backstage and how did it feel when you were on the runway walking past this magnificent murals of various interpretations of womanhood?
MR: Totally incredible! Backstage I was trying to stay calm all the time and just keep smiling. When the time came to step up to the stage, it felt amazing - I forgot about being nervous and tried to be very focused.

IMA: Beauty is only part of a model's overall package, what are your interests and passions beyond modelling and fashion?
MR: I'm so into music. It's probably more to do with singing though I also have a piano at home but I never have time to practise as I'm always travelling. I'm always trying to cover the singer Delilah, she's one of my absolute tops! I'm not sure if I would take it seriously so for now it will be just a hobby but you never know...

IMA: Modelling offers long-term possibilities for a very select few. What do you hope to achieve in your modelling career and what other professions would you have considered had modelling not intervened?
MR: I can't predict what will happen in the future so I prefer to live in the moment... If I wouldn't be a model, I would perhaps be interested in astronomy especially after having seen the movie Gravity! I've also thought about being an actor, in the future I would like to at least try some acting.

IMA: What makes you "Inoubliable" (Unforgettable)?
MR: This question has made me think a little. I can truly say that I'm a good-hearted and friendly person. And oh, I smile all the time even if there is no particular reason ;-).

Photographer Collier Schorr imbues the pages of Self Service's Spring/Summer 2014 issue with her contemplative vision of fashion meets art for an editorial starring five of modelling's most in demand faces. Current 'it' girls Amanda Murphy, Elisabeth Erm, Andreea Diaconu, Binx Walton, and Juliana Schurig look ready to dive into Spring decked out casual ensembles styled by Fashion Editor Suzanne Koller. The five newcomers pose with their hair pulled back, braided and knotted to reveal their striking natural beauty and snippets of their distinct personalities while assuming a series of non-modelly poses. Schorr who just opened her 10th exhibition entitled "8 Women" at the 303 Gallery in Chelsea New York, reveals of her approach to photographing models to the International New York Times, "I don't know what to do until I meet them. Who are you? I'm going to take that picture." And so she does as Amanda Murphy gazes into Collier's lens with an unapologetic air of self-assurance or perhaps while Elisabeth Erm effortlessly seduces the viewer with her unembellished beauty, and no doubt as Binx Walton adopts a buffalo stance with a look of teen defiance. Purple Magazine's Olivier Zahm sums it up perfectly when describing his collaboration with Schorr in 1995 for a fashion story on Helmut Lang, "At the time, artists were much more careful about work in fashion. She worked without a stylist. She is about expressing the true personality of the model, not creating an artificial beauty."
